First for Jabali

New winners

Jabali – Queensland-based, Clear Mountain Fairview resident Jabali (Exceed And Excel) sired his first winner on Saturday when the Mick Price and Michael Kent jnr-trained Jabali Ridge (2 g ex Single Princess by Not A Single Doubt) landed the opening Arbour Plate (1100m) at Flemington. First season sire Jabali covered 27 mares at a fee of $4,950 last year, while his race-record was headlined by a second-place finish behind Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) in the 2014 renewal of the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). 

 

New Group / Grade 1 winners

El Roca – Westbury Stud resident El Roca (Fastnet Rock) sired his first Group 1 winner on Saturday when Travelling Light (3 f ex Cissy Bowen by Colombia) took out the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham. El Roca stood at a fee of NZ$9,000 (plus GST) last year, while his progeny also includes the Group 1-placed Bella Mente and the stakes performer Moeraki. 

Exceed And Excel – Fresh from a record-breaking result at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Darley flagbearer Exceed And Excel (Danehill) provided a timely reminder of his global prowess when Irish import Queen Supreme (3 f ex Call Later by Gone West) landed the Paddock Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at Kenilworth on Saturday, becoming the 15th top-tier winner for her sire. 

Var – Avontuur Stud resident Var (Forest Wildcat) sired his tenth Group/Grade 1 winner when Vardy (4 g ex Cupid by Jet Master) landed the Queen’s Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) at Kenilworth on Saturday. Vardy has now six of his nine starts, while Var’s progeny also include Variety Club and Via Africa. 

 

New stakes winners

Amadeus Wolf – Late shuttler Amadeus Wolf (Mozart) was handed his seventh stakes winner on Saturday when Amadeus (7 h ex Jaywalk by Dangerous) landed the Chester Manifold Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington. Amadeus Wolf shuttled to Australia for three consecutive breeding seasons between 2010 and 2012, covering 87 mares at a fee of $11,000 in 2011. He died of a stroke at Haras des Faunes in France in 2017, while his progeny include Australian Group 2 winner Mister Sea Wolf. 

Deep Impact – Late Shadai Stallion Station resident Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) sired his 147th stakes winner on Sunday when the Kazuo Fujisawa-trained Sanctuaire (3 f ex Hilda’s Passion by Canadian Frontier) landed the Shinzan Kinen (Gr 3, 1600m) at Kyoto. Deep Impact, who was euthanised in July having suffered a catastrophic loss of mobility, is the sire of seven-time top-flight winner Gentildonna and first season Arrowfield Stud resident Mikki Isle. 

Rip Van Winkle – Germanicus (4 g ex St Germaine by Keeper) secured a first Group-race victory in the Anniversary Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham on Saturday to provide Westbury Stud stallion Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) with his 31st stakes winner. Germanicus has now won four of his 13 starts, while Rip Van Winkle – who stood for a fee of NZ$12,500 (plus GST) last year – is best known as the sire of Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Dick Whittington and consistent Group-level performer Te Akau Shark. 

Scat Daddy – Magic Star (4 f ex Meadow Breeze by Meadowlake) scored a half-length victory in the Marshua’s River Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, to hand late Coolmore sire Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) his 126th stakes winner. Scat Daddy’s legacy includes Coolmore shuttlers No Nay Never and Mendelssohn, with the former having sired 2019 The Everest (1200m) starter Ten Sovereigns.

Shocking – The John and Karen Parsons-trained Camino Rocoso (6 g ex Our Centasea by Centaine) won the Trentham Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) on Saturday to provide Rich Hill Stud resident Shocking (Street Cry) with his ninth stakes winner. Shocking, who won the 2009 renewal of the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), is the sire of New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Fanatic and stood for a fee of NZ$8,500 in 2019. 

Tapit – Tusk (7 g ex It’s Midnight by Shamardal) landed a belated first success in Graded company when securing the Tropical Turf Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday to become the 131st stakes winner for Gainesway Farm resident Tapit (Pulpit). Tusk has now won eight of his 37 starts, while Tapit’s progeny also include Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f)) winner Tonalist.
